I loved Nancy Drew when I was a girl, and now my daughter has discovered her too! Nancy seems to be having a resurgence these days. Besides the old tried-and-true series of books about the titian-haired sleuth*, there is now a new series for younger girls called The Nancy Drew Notebooks (Nancy and her pals began solving mysteries at age eight!), and even a new movie coming out in May, that updates the whole story, in a really cute way! American Girl books, dolls and accessories hold a real fascination for the 7-12 set-- and moms can love them too! The whole premise behind American Girl is that there is a need for dolls that depict girls being girls, not adults with abnormally proportioned bodies, or tarted up brats! The American Girl doll and book collections are not only wholesome and beautifully made, but they capture young girls' imaginations and teach them something about what all girls have in common-- friends and family, loyalty and bravery, heart and soul. Lauren Child is the British author and illustrator of fabulous children's books for kids of all ages! Charlie and Lola appeals to both preschoolers and tweeners (as it stars one of each), and Clarice Bean is a tweener who can't seem to pay attention, and frequently slips into flights of fancy. Charlie and Lola are now a TV show also, airing on the Disney Channel here in the States. As an American Anglophile, I adore the accents and the speech patterns, and the little anglicisms (is that a word?)-- for instance, I don't know one American tweener who says "utterly" like Clarice Bean! I just love it! The humor is so British, the situations so imaginative-- if you haven't checked out Lauren Child's work, you need to try it! Check out my links below!

A true Minnesota icon, Cedric Adams' name was known by almost everyone in the Upper Midwest in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. Cedric's folksy humor and infectious laugh, as well as his provincial style, endeared him to his audiences. Known as 'the hardest working journalist in the world,' at one point he did 54 radio shows, eight television broadcasts, and 15 newspaper columns a week! Upon his death at age 58 in 1961, one fan of Cedric's said it was like losing his "daily companion of 30 years." Morocco is something I'm just beginning to research. I've been invited there in 2007 by some dear old friends, and would love to take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunited with them and to visit the seaside town of Essaouira.
