I loved Nancy Drew when I was a girl, and now my daughter has discovered her too! Nancy seems to be having a resurgence these days. Besides the old tried-and-true series of books about the titian-haired sleuth*, there is now a new series for younger girls called The Nancy Drew Notebooks (Nancy and her pals began solving mysteries at age eight!), and even a new movie coming out in May, that updates the whole story, in a really cute way! American Girl books, dolls and accessories hold a real fascination for the 7-12 set-- and moms can love them too! The whole premise behind American Girl is that there is a need for dolls that depict girls being girls, not adults with abnormally proportioned bodies, or tarted up brats! The American Girl doll and book collections are not only wholesome and beautifully made, but they capture young girls' imaginations and teach them something about what all girls have in common-- friends and family, loyalty and bravery, heart and soul. Hannah Montana-- Disney Channel's latest multi-media hit! Miley Stewart is a regular middle-school girl leading a double life as a famous pop star! The rest of the characters follow the familiar Disney channel formula: cool, yet not cool parent, goofy brother, and two best friends (one boy, one girl). Also following Disney's successful formulaic plan, the show branches off into books, music, and music videos! Check out the fun of Hannah Montana and get the the best of both worlds!

Lauren Child is the British author and illustrator of fabulous children's books for kids of all ages! Charlie and Lola appeals to both preschoolers and tweeners (as it stars one of each), and Clarice Bean is a tweener who can't seem to pay attention, and frequently slips into flights of fancy. Charlie and Lola are now a TV show also, airing on the Disney Channel here in the States. As an American Anglophile, I adore the accents and the speech patterns, and the little anglicisms (is that a word?)-- for instance, I don't know one American tweener who says "utterly" like Clarice Bean! I just love it! The humor is so British, the situations so imaginative-- if you haven't checked out Lauren Child's work, you need to try it! Check out my links below!

A true Minnesota icon, Cedric Adams' name was known by almost everyone in the Upper Midwest in the 1930s, 40s, and 50s. Cedric's folksy humor and infectious laugh, as well as his provincial style, endeared him to his audiences. Known as 'the hardest working journalist in the world,' at one point he did 54 radio shows, eight television broadcasts, and 15 newspaper columns a week! Upon his death at age 58 in 1961, one fan of Cedric's said it was like losing his "daily companion of 30 years." This is a lens to help you explore northern Minnesota, specifically the areas of the Iron Range and the Arrowhead. These are all things I have done with my two kids on my own, or with my husband, kids, and sometimes even the dogs! All family-friendly, inexpensive (or free!) and fun. As a part-time resident of the area for many years, I will point you to little known points of interest and fun things to do in the area. I know the Iron Range best, but many of my day trips with my family include the Arrowhead region as well. I will let you know if I am recommending an activity with first-hand knowledge, or if I've only heard about it. Relax, breathe deep, and prepare to enjoy northern Minnesota!

Morocco is something I'm just beginning to research. I've been invited there in 2007 by some dear old friends, and would love to take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunited with them and to visit the seaside town of Essaouira. Can I handle the expense? Should my husband join me? What is the weather like in Morocco? The food? The culture? What is there to do? These are all things that I will be exploring over the next several months, and I will share all my findings with you here. Come along with me as I begin to explore the possiblity of Morocco 2007!

One of the best-kept secrets on the web: Online stores have sales and specials all the time that not all customers are aware of! You might not know about these unadvertised coupons and discounts even if you have a store credit card, or are signed up to an account on the store's website. There are several good websites available that keep track of current discounts and specials, and you should be checking these websites before you make an online purchase if you want the best deal you can get! The sites I list here are free, and most allow you to personalize the service-- even having them regularly e-mail you specials and discounts from your list of favorite stores. Shop around and keep track with these tools, and never pay full price again!

Maybe you're one of those parents who, when your baby was born said, "I'm never going to put my child in any cheesy character clothes or shoes!" I was! And I really did hold off for a long time. Oh, I bought everything else character-wise-- books, dolls, plush, games, toys, Valentines, etc. And I did the birthday parties up right from number one: My son's first birthday party was a Blue's Clues party before they even had Blue's Clues merchandise out! I made everything-- including taking a picture of Steve in the Thinking Chair on the TV, having copies made, and glueing the copies onto all the invitations! Thank Heavens things are so much easier now! Kids' character items are everywhere-- just for the begging! This lens highlights my own eBay store, which specializes in kids' character items, and also includes a few ideas and other stores I like for finding your own.
