Ray Mabus began his Washington career in public service as legal council to the U.S. House Agriculture Committee. Following this post, Mabus returned to work for the governor’s office in Mississippi. He used that experience to be elected State Auditor from 1984 to 1988. After serving as a State Auditor Ray Mabus defeated Jack Reed to win the gubernatorial race. Running on the slogan that “Mississippi Will Never Be Last Again” Ray Mabus was, at the time, the youngest governor in the nation. Mississippi was represented well in his Saudi office with the state flag prominently displayed next to the American flag and the coffee table decorated with an Ackerman phone book. During his career, Ray Mabus has garnered significant rewards. These awards include the U.S. Army’s Distinguished Civilian Service Award, the National Wildlife Federation Conservation Achievement Award, the Mississippi Association of Educators’ Friend of Education Award, and the King Abdul Aziz Award from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
