Currently works as Director of User Experience at the Information Technology Services of Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) — one of the most prestigious Portuguese schools of engineering, science and technology — where he leads three units: a Multimedia and E-learning Unit, a HelpDesk Unit and a Microcomputer Unit. He's involved in management, user experience, customer service, productivity methods and workflow optimization.

Worked as Chief Executive Officer at Enough Pepper, which developed the web application Survs, highly acclaimed by the international media and users and which was considered the best online survey software by .net magazine. Previously worked as a consultant of Internet Banking on the Web Site Management team of Millennium bcp — the largest private bank in Portugal.

He's one of the most active promoters of the user experience field in Portugal. Founded the Portuguese User Experience Network (REPUX), he's the curator of the library of design patterns of Instituto Superior Técnico (BPDIST) and has published several articles about user experience.

Gustavo follows a user centered design philosophy informed wherever possible by the study of user behaviours and attitudes from an early stage of each project. The passion for research began with his degree in sociology, but soon he opted for an "unorthodox" adaptation of methods and techniques of analysis, practicing a type of research that combines influences from social sciences, user research and market research. This approach is paralleled in the way he applies the disciplines of user experience beyond their traditional use, often crossing them with management practices and productivity methods.
