Alan Gutman is an attorney, and a legal officer for the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL). Between August 2002 and May 2005 he served as defense counsel before the Special Panel for Serious Crimes in East Timor under the auspices of the United Nations Mission of Support in East Timor (UNMISET). His trial work before the Special Panel resulted in the acquittal of two clients on all charges, and included landmark cases touching upon the responsibility of juveniles for international crimes and the mental competency of accused individuals to stand for trial. In addition to a Juris Doctor degree from the University of California at Berkeley (Boalt Hall), Mr. Gutman holds an MA degree in International Policy Studies and a BA degree in International Relations from Stanford University.
